What would you say if I told you that I know an effective way to have better relationships with people and also set up all of your children for success? This will even work on very "intense" children. I have been using it for several years as a parent and classroom teacher and it is amazing to see the difference it makes.
I spent the past week in Minneapolis, Minnesota completing my re-certification as an Advanced Trainer of the Nurtured Heart Approach®. It was an amazing week of leadership and connecting with a network of over 80 trainers who are parents, educators, mental health professionals, counselors, administrators, public health workers, speech language pathologists, mental health practitioners, behavior specialists and the list goes on...
This experience has really recharged me for the upcoming school year. I am equipped to notch up my use of the approach and plan to share it with anyone who will listen. It is too good to keep to myself. Many fellow trainers across the country who participated in the training last week have been sharing the impact on various social media platforms. There were even trainers from as far away as Japan and Australia. It was a great environment to be in and the greatness continues. It is such an exciting experience to share with others!
Let me share a simple, practical experience that I had with 4 other trainers while we were there. Since we had traveled into Minnesota from other places, we decided to visit the Mall of America one evening. On our way back (via Uber), I instigated a conversation with our driver. We all joined in to simply recognize him for several things that we noticed and appreciated about him. The launching pad for the recognition was because we were standing immediately outside the mall entrance; however, the pick-up location was at a parking lot across the street. He called and we walked over to the vehicle. The trainer who had the telephone conversation with the driver expressed appreciation to him for his patience and highlighted that he could have been irritated or upset because we were not in place; but he wasn't. The rest of us tag-teamed and just kept highlighting his greatness. (Side note: We gleaned some more information about him from the conversation that I started.) He was completely lit up by the time he dropped us off and so were we. It really doesn't take a lot; but we need to be intentional when we interact and look through positive lenses.
As I plan for the 2018-2019 school year, I will be utilizing this blog to document how I use the approach in my classroom and the effects it has on my relationships with my students and others. Subscribe to my YouTube channel to keep up with me on this journey!
